Maritime issues are a threat to tourism
English Français  German  Italian

The Director of community outreach and public affairs at the African Centre for Strategic Studies was in Mauritius for a symposium on maritime security. He speaks of the “shared strategic interests” of Mauritius and the US.
You participated in a symposium on the theme “Meeting Maritime Security Challenges for Mauritius in the 21st century”. Could you elaborate on these challenges?

My part of the programme was to talk about how to put together a national security strategy, why it is important and how to communicate it across a broader spectrum of society so that everybody can participate in its development. I talked about the shared strategic interests of the United States and Africa. We share interests on a number of fronts. One is a concern for anti-terrorism efforts. Not that Africa is in any way a terrorist continent, but there are elements and vulnerabilities that support the possibility of recruiting for terrorism. If people are poor, if they are not educated, if they don’t have an opportunity to succeed, they might become candidates for recruitment by terrorist organizations.

“Everything
is secondary
to peace and stability issues.
You can’t have the others
unless you have those two.”

FOREIGNERS VIEW: “I’ve not adapted to the fact of early closing here”
English Français  German  Italian

Jesal Mertia

Sales and Marketing Officer

I have been in Mauritius for about two years. Mauritius is very nice. It’s quiet, peaceful and I really feel relaxed here. I don’t find any big cultural differences in Mauritius compared to my country. The food and the festivals are almost the same. One thing, which I have not adapted to, however, is that everything closes early. Even the restaurants and the banks! People have to take permission during working hours to do their banking and it’s a loss of productive time. Shops and banks must be open till late to offer greater facilities to working people. Even the work culture is different. People seem to stick to the 9 to 4 working hours. People are rushing to go home early. For me, it’s a bit strange.
