Tourist arrivals in 2012: The CSO revises forecasts downward
The Central Statistics Office (CSO), the Statistics Department of the
Ministry of Finance has revised down its forecast for the Mauritian
tourism industry this year. The CSO estimates, based on information
gleaned from industry professionals, that 980 000 tourists visit
Mauritius this year and not 1,101,000 as originally planned. Despite
this revision, the CSO provides that tourist arrivals will grow by 1.6%
this year.
Tourism revenue reached Rs 30 billion for the nine months
The number of tourist arrivals for the period January-September amounted
to 674,383, an increase of 4.3% compared to the same period in 2010
(646,656 arrivals), according to Statistics Mauritius. Arrivals from
Europe increased 1.5% to 421,060 visitors.

Budget 2011: Mauritius wants to boost markets outside Europe
Mauritius is moving towards a rebalancing of its tourism industry, which
as we know, is heavily dependent on the Eurozone. In his budget speech
yesterday, Finance Minister Pravin Jugnauth, has indicated that the
state of Mauritius will invest Rs 1 billion over the next five years for
the consolidation of the tourism industry and thereby boost the
arrivals outside the Euro zone. Rs 2 billion is earmarked for the sector
as a whole during the same period.
The Tourism Statistics Committee (TSC) of the Ministry of Tourism has recently revised its forecasts upwards. Some 920,000 visitors are expected, 5000 is higher than initial forecasts. Growth for 2010 expected to reach 5.5%.
8.7% growth in tourist arrivals in September in Mauritius

Under the blow of the crisis, Paris has recorded a decline of 7.8% of its tourists in the first half of 2009 compared to the same period of 2008 but prospects are better for the end of the year.
Time is inclement for local tourism, economic crisis obliges. At least, it is what announce the forecasters of the Bank of Maurice. In their last monthly return in date, they affirm that the incomes in this sector dropped by 31,4% only in May.
Gross receipts from tourism declined by 20.3% from Rs 3.7 billion in April 2008 to Rs 2.9 billion in April 2009, according to the latest monthly bulletin of the Bank of Mauritius. On a cumulative basis, revenue from tourism for the period July 2008 to April 2009 were contracted by 11.8% to Rs 32.3 billion compared to Rs 36.6 billion recorded during the corresponding period of last year. Temporary estimates for the first quarter of 2009 indicate that the current account of balance of payments has accused a deficit below Rs 1.7 billion recorded during the first quarter of 2008.

Cependant, les autorités touristiques mauriciennes estiment que la " performance est honorable pour la destination avec la crise qui sévit actuellement sur les principaux marchés émetteurs ". Le ministère du Tourisme, des Loisirs et de Communications extérieures indique à titre de comparaison des pourcentages enregistrés aux Seychelles et aux Maldives, les concurrents directs de Maurice. Selon le ministère de tutelle, les Seychelles ont enregistré une décroissance jusqu'à moins 12% du nombre de ses arrivées alors que les Maldives en ont enregistré jusqu'à moins 4,8% durant cette même période.
Maurice a été classé 40e dans le Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index (TTCI) 2009, rendu public cette semaine par la Forum économique mondial (WEF) en Suisse. L'année dernière notre pays était à la 41e position. Plusieurs critères ont été pris en compte pour déterminer le classement de Maurice parmi 133 pays. Selon ces résultats, Maurice est premier dans un seul critère 'faire du voyage et du tourisme (V and T) sa priorité'. Le pays a été classé en troisième position selon le critère d'affinité pour le voyage et le tourisme. Maurice a été classé en 24e position selon le critère du cadre régulateur pour le voyage et le tourisme et au 13e rang pour les politiques de régulations. Concernant le respect de l'environnement, le pays se classe à la 53e position alors que selon les critères de la sécurité ainsi que la santé et l'hygiène, Maurice se classe respectivement au 40e et 60e rang.
Le bilan financier du Groupe Naiade montre une chute dans ses recettes pour l’exercice se terminant au 30 septembre 2008. Le Directeur général du Groupe Patrice Hardy (photo) prévoit une amélioration de la situation dans les mois à venir.
Après avoir enregistré un nombre de 906 971 arrivées touristiques entre janvier et décembre 2007, Maurice affiche une croissance se situant entre 2,5 et 3 % pour l'année 2008. Un taux qui chute de plus de 12 %, contre une croissance exceptionnelle de 15,06 % en 2007. De sources sûres, il nous revient également qu'il n'y a eu aucune progression du taux d'arrivées en décembre 2008 comparé à la même période l'année dernière.
Les gros nuages s'amoncellent dans le secteur touristique. Après une basse saison moins performante et une croissance revue à la baisse en termes d'arrivées touristiques, mais aussi en termes d'occupations d'hôtel pour 2008, les statistiques n'annoncent pas d'amélioration pour les mois à venir. Au contraire, les opérateurs appréhendent le premier trimestre 2009, les réservations tardant à venir. Les partenaires du secteur mettent les bouchées doubles pour anticiper la crise en 2009. Mais, selon nos informations, parmi les mesures radicales enclenchées pour pallier la crise, certaines entreprises, en vue de réduire les coûts, ont choisi de se défaire d'une partie de leur personnel…
Tourisme : craintes malgré la croissance de 2,8 % en octobre
Surprise. Malgré la crise financière internationale, le pays a enregistré une croissance des arrivées touristiques de 2,8 % face à la même période l’an dernier. Un effet de surprise agréable, qui n’a pourtant pas dissipé les craintes au niveau des petits hôtels.
Après quatre années d'envolée, le tourisme international s'est fait couper les ailes par la crise financière: sa croissance devrait ralentir à 2% en 2008 et tourner autour de zéro en 2009, prévoit l'Organisation mondiale du tourisme (OMT).
Based on data available on tourist arrivals for the first nine months of the year and information gathered from stakeholders, the forecast of tourist arrivals for the year 2008 has been revised downwards to 940,000, i.e. +3.6 per cent over the figure of 906,971 in 2007.
Alors que la haute saison approche à grands pas, le tourisme ne connaît pas ses plus beaux jours. Le taux de remplissage est en dessous de celui de novembre 2007. Souvent oubliés, les établissements plus modestes ressentent l’impact d’un contexte international difficile.
Les opérateurs du secteur touristique sont unanimes à reconnaître que les destinations longs-courriers sont affectées par la crise économique financière et monétaire. Maurice n'en est pas épargnée.
Les performances financières de nombreux groupes hôteliers sont inférieures à celles de l’année dernière. Ce qui est attribué à l’appréciation de la roupie, mais aussi à des coûts d’opération en hausse et une baisse dans les réservations.
Le ministre du Tourisme, Xavier-Luc Duval, a exprimé hier son optimisme
par rapport à la croissance touristique pour le mois courant. Il a
souligné que les estimations indiquent que la croissance pour le mois
de juillet sera de 5 % à 6 %.
Les choses se corsent dans le secteur touristique. Les "moments difficiles" et les "nuages à l'horizon" évoqués par le ministre du Tourisme et le président de l'association des hôteliers, sont bel et bien là. Après une croissance de plus de 15% en 2007, l'année 2008 a démarré dans des conditions assez moroses pour l'industrie touristique. Avec une croissance de 3,7% en mai dernier, les opérateurs ont commencé à se ronger les sangs à l'idée que les mois de juillet, août et septembre devraient apporter leur lot de problème au secteur hôtelier, avec un taux de remplissage en nette baisse.
Les trois derniers mois n'ont pas été excellents en terme de croissance
dans le secteur touristique. Après une performance de 7,5% en février
et 11,5% en mars, les mois d'avril à juin ont affiché des taux assez
faibles, soit 3,6% en avril, 3,7% en mai et 2,2% en juin dernier. Une
performance à mettre sur le compte d'une situation internationale très
difficile, avec la flambée des prix du pétrole, les mauvaises
conditions économiques en Europe, la dépréciation du dollar et
l'appréciation de la roupie.
Le CENTRAL Statistical Office maintient ses prévisions de croissance pour l’industrie touristique en 2008, soit une performance de 7,5 %, avec 975 000 touristes. Le CSO se base sur la performance de 7,2 % réalisée au premier trimestre de l’année. Par ailleurs, selon la Banque de Maurice, les recettes touristique pour l’année en cours devraient atteindre Rs 48 milliards, ce qui constituera une hausse de 18 % par rapport a 2007.
